How to Build a Twitter Following

We have come to a consensus on the influential role social media now plays in our professional and personal lives. In the sea of social networking platforms, Twitter has become one of the leaders in the social media frontier.

Below are some tips for anyone who wants to use this powerful tool to its full potential and increase their Twitter following:

1. Present a consistent brand.

Design your profile, including your name, to clearly show your interests, qualities and expertise. Be sure that your tweets reflect this brand. Explore unique or specific ways that you enjoy using Twitter, and let your following come to expect that from you.

2. What you give is what you get.

Your level of participation will determine the amount of interest you generate from your peers, ultimately dictating whether others will follow you. Post relevant content for your audience at least once a day or more if you can.

3. Engage your followers.

Some Twitter users don't consider engaging their existing network of "Tweeple" (people who use Twitter). Build buzz around your Twitter name by seeking to engage others in your network through conversations, questions or sharing.

4. Invite others to follow you.

It may seem obvious, but asking friends, colleagues, acquaintances or partner corporations to follow you on Twitter is an effective way to build your following quickly.

5. Make yourself visible on the social web.

Give others every opportunity to discover you. Encourage people to follow your Twitter account in your email signature. If you write a blog or own a website, direct readers and visitors to your Twitter feed. Also link your Twitter updates to your other social media accounts, such as Facebook and LinkedIn.

6. Optimize your Twitter name.

If possible, use your name as your Twitter name. Avoid characters and symbols. Keep your name short since you only have 140 characters for each tweet.

7. Consider advertising for more followers.

A strategically placed banner ad appealing to a tech-savvy audience can increase your following quickly.

8. Follow many other Twitter users.

Find people with similar interests. This will give you access to more content that you can share with your followers. Remember, those you follow may follow you too.
