Dos and Don’ts: Networking Like the Pros

OK, so you've got about 30 seconds to make a great first impression.

Here are some helpful tips on networking to make those seconds count:

1. Arrive prepared and on time.

  • Do research attendees before arriving at the event. This will help you make
the most of your time.
  • Don't think fashionably late applies to business networking. Arrive early to make connections before the room fills up. Remember, "The early bird gets the worm."

2. Identify your prospect's mission.

  • Do inquire about what their company does to learn how you can help them.

  • Don't talk all about yourself. Find value in listening to what's important to each person and make that your priority.

3. Understand the purpose of your conversation.

  • Do make time to help, advise and introduce people to other attendees. Helping someone out now could lead to opportunities or referrals later.

  • Don't go in with a self-serving attitude. If you meet someone who isn't a right fit, don't disregard him or her because you think there are bigger fish to catch. You never know when a networking contact could refer you to potential new business, new partnerships or even new employee candidates.

4. Recap and document your engagements:

  • Do record your contacts with any notes from the event, and follow up with a "nice to have met you" e-mail immediately.

  • Don't be disorganized. All your time will go to waste if you can't match a card to a face. Find creative and productive ways to stay in touch with people, such as including them on company e-newsletters, sending relevant news articles or simply inviting them to join your social network.
