Corporate Greening Tips: Beyond the Blue Bin

It’s no longer just a trend – going green is now an essential part of business. More customers prefer to work with proactive, eco-friendly companies, and more employees want to be apart of organizations that care.

With a few simple steps, your company can start down the path to “greener” pastures. Check out the tips below and make a difference:

1. Use less paper.

Technology is quickly changing modern document management. Rather than printing reports, newsletters and presentations, try using projectors, e-readers and e-mail for immediate and efficient communication. And, if you must print, make double-sided documents on recycled paper. The American Forest and Paper Association states that recycling paper uses 60 percent less energy than manufacturing virgin timber paper.

2. Find another use.

Associates at Gartner and HP released a statement saying that the average Web user prints 28 pages daily. Reuse your discarded office supplies by creating note pads with scrap paper, emptying old binders for new projects and even repurposing cardboard boxes for shipping or storage. These simple steps not only help the environment, but they will help save your company money.

3. Make it communal.

Your green office practices can also support your corporate social responsibility efforts! Donate old computers, printers and other office supplies to local organizations and community members. This type of recycling helps minimize landfills and reduces your carbon footprint.

4. Reduce resource consumption.

Make minor adjustments that can help conserve natural resources and energy. Your company can purchase compact fluorescent light bulbs that last 10 times longer, reduce energy usage by up to 75 percent and lower the utilities bill. Employees can also look into carpooling or telecommuting to work at least once a week. Preserving gas and car mileage may even improve company morale!

5. Join the Power IT Down Day Movement.

The second annual Power IT Down Day is just around the corner. On August 27, people nationwide are shutting down desktops, printers and other peripherals after work to significantly reduce energy use and save money. To illustrate how energy savings can be truly utilized, Power IT Down Day partners will donate a minimum of $20,000 to Wounded Warrior Project. Sign up today at Power IT Down Day.
