Montgomery County Department of Economic Development

Polishing a tarnished image

Montgomery County Department of Economic Development

Situation

Businesses in Montgomery County, Maryland, perceived their local government as indifferent. As a result, the County lost companies to other jurisdictions in an increasingly competitive economic development environment in the Washington, D.C. area.

Montgomery County Department of Economic Development had to:

  • Position Montgomery County favorably among its competitors.
  • Brand the County with a unique look and feel.
  • Research regional competitors and the national market to determine effective economic development strategies.
  • Improve retention by making local businesses feel connected to the County.

Results

Boscobel developed integrated marketing and design materials that captured the essence of Montgomery County as the center for bio-tech and high-tech companies and organizations. We created all the components of a new County identity, including custom logo, type, graphics, slogan and an eight-minute video promoting Montgomery County as the choice business and lifestyle location — winning rave reviews with County business executives. We also developed marketing brochures that coordinated graphically with materials created by the state of Maryland, allowing the County to share the state’s trade show booths with a unified appearance.

Senior appointed and elected officials approved of the campaign and all its components. More importantly, business executives polled by independent groups have reported a much healthier economic climate in Montgomery County than in years past.
